Artificial Intelligence: a Double-Edged Sword

The cyber security landscape has always evolved rapidly; However, this is now fuelled by the ever-expanding use of artificial intelligence (AI). 


While AI promises ground-breaking advancements in threat detection and prevention, and many other capabilities, its potential for malicious use is, unsurprisingly, already being exploited. 


To ensure we can truly benefit from its use, we must consider both AI's power for good, and the ability to corrupt its use. 


Below we summaries some of the key points, and we will cover these in more detail in our short series on Artificial Intelligence and its use within cyber security.



  • Anomaly Detection AI can analyse massive datasets of network traffic and user behaviour to identify subtle anomalies that may indicate malicious activity. This allows for more proactive, and holistic, threat detection increasing the chance of detection before significant damage can occur.

  • Predictive Risk Analysis AI can model attacker behaviour and predict future attack vectors, allowing security teams to prioritise defences and allocate resources efficiently. This provides a proactive approach to defence instead of reactive firefighting.

  • Automated Response & Mitigation AI can automate more complex incident response tasks than traditional SOAR, such as active responses to an attack beyond system isolation. This saves valuable time, resources, and reduces the impact of attacks.


  • Automated Attacks AI algorithms can scan vast networks for vulnerabilities, automate phishing campaigns, and launch brute-force attacks with inhuman efficiency. This creates a constant onslaught, that may well overwhelm traditional security measures.

  • Evolving Malware AI can craft adaptive malware that bypasses signature-based detection by modifying its code in real-time. This further challenges the effectiveness of traditional antivirus software and will demand more sophisticated defence strategies.

  • Social Engineering & Phishing AI can impersonate real people with uncanny accuracy, crafting targeted phishing emails and manipulating online conversations to trick users into revealing sensitive information. This even extends into audio and video impersonation, which may be used in omni-channel attacks.

Challenges of AI-Powered Security


  • Bias & Transparency AI algorithms trained on biased data can perpetuate discriminatory practices or generate false positives, leading to unfair security measures. Transparency in AI models is crucial to trust and accountability.

  • Adversarial Attacks Cybercriminals can manipulate AI models through carefully crafted data, causing them to misclassify legitimate activities as threats or miss real attacks. Robustness testing and continuous monitoring are essential.

  • Resource Intensive Implementing and maintaining advanced AI security solutions requires significant computational resources and skilled personnel, which may be beyond the reach of smaller organisations.


Moving Forward: A Symbiotic Approach


The battle between AI-powered offense and defence is ongoing. To stay ahead, security teams must embrace a proactive, intelligence-driven approach. 


  • Continuous Learning & Adaptation AI models need to be constantly updated with new threat intelligence and attack patterns to maintain effectiveness.

  • Human-AI Collaboration AI should be seen as a powerful tool to augment human expertise, not replace it. Human oversight and critical thinking remain essential for informed decision-making.

  • Information Sharing Sharing threat intelligence and best practices on responsible AI development across sectors and borders is crucial to combatting global cyber threats.

By acknowledging the risks and opportunities, leveraging AI responsibly, and fostering collaboration, organisations can harness the power of artificial intelligence to create a more resilient cyber posture.
